Rob and I have been divinely inspired to steward our land naturally (without chemicals) and produce quality crops, food and seeds. Our passion is to grow heirlooms in real soil and save the seeds to replant. Our goal is to maintain the rare and endangered genes of each variety and offer it to others.
At R S Lahman Heirlooms we guarantee integrity and quality. Plants are grown here, seeds saved and processed by hand.
Several years of working the land has proven beyond a doubt that it can be done. Once the soil is balanced the magic of heirloom seeds do the rest. They grow and provide nutrient dense quality food that tastes great and is balanced energy for man and animal. It takes patience and time. Something conventional growers of grocery store food do not have.
Heirloom seeds have been preserved from the cellars of time. A heirloom is a piece of furniture or something of value that has been preserved or passed down thru generations. Heirloom seeds have to be over 50 years old, not man made, g m o, hybrid, or new and improved. They represent a place, a time a flavor that can be revived by growing the seed again. What is critical to understand is they have their original genetics. Given the right conditions (good soil) they have an innate intelligence and just “know” what to do. They do not need water, sprays, inoculates or fertilizer( chemical , certified for organic or bio- dynamic preps).
As homesteaders our winter food is “Heirlooms” such as white open pollinated dent corn, a variety of beans, ancient wheat, winter squash, potatoes, carrots and beets. These are nothing what you will buy at a grocery store.
The beans are full of nutrients that don’t give you gas, the corn I grind into meal for cereal, our wheat grown here we grind fresh for bread or soak for crunchy wholesome cereal. These varieties are from 1700′s, 1800′s that Indians used to survive on. The squash have a wonderful sweet flavor as these varieties were for the long haul not the fast food system we have today. They actually continue to ripen after being picked and the flavor improves. The gluten in our wheat actually breaks down and can be easily digested. This food has minerals from the soil to feed our body to keep it balanced and healthy. We feel the difference
At the farm in Tara, Ontario we have a heirloom plant sale in May. We have peppers, lettuce, watermelons and tomato plants.
